Frequently Asked Questions
Should I repair or replace my water heater?
Traditional water heaters typically last around 10 years, and tankless water heaters can last up to 20 years. If your water heater is nearing the end of its lifespan and the repair would be more costly than replacement, we would advise investing in a new unit. A good rule of thumb is to replace the water heater if the repairs become frequent and cost more than 50% of what it would cost to replace it. If your water heater no longer produces hot water at the same level it used to, it may be more cost-effective to replace an energy-inefficient water heater instead of paying expensive energy bills.
Why is there a water leak under my water heater?
Water leaking underneath your water heater could be the first sign of a serious problem and should be addressed as soon as possible. There are a few possibilities where a water heater could leak, including the temperature and pressure relief (T&P) valve, a faulty drain valve or a leak in the hot water tank itself. Contacting a professional plumber to investigate further will help identify the issue at hand.
Why does my hot water smell bad? Is that dangerous?
A foul smell emitting from your water heater is typically caused by sulfate bacteria that can develop when warm water is left in the tank for too long. In some cases, it can be caused by a chemical reaction between the magnesium rod and water, creating sulfate gas. The sulfur in your water causing the bad smell has no known health effects, but it can cause problems with your plumbing or stain your fixtures.
